At Home-Start Kernow, we are always looking for ways to strengthen the support we offer families across Cornwall. One of the most important ways we do this is through our ongoing Quality Assurance (QA) work as part of the national framework set by Home-Start UK.

Quality Assurance is more than a process or a checklist. For us, it’s an opportunity to pause, reflect and ensure that everything we do is working as effectively and safely as possible.

A framework for strong, sustainable support

The Home-Start UK Quality Assurance framework helps local schemes like ours assess how well we are operating across key areas of our work. These include:

  • Governance & Leadership
  • Operating a Home-Start Scheme
  • Quality & Impact
  • Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI)
  • Money & Funding

I’m pleased to share that Home-Start Kernow has now successfully completed assessments in all these areas. Each stage involved careful consideration of our policies, processes and day-to-day practice, alongside gathering evidence to demonstrate how we deliver safe, effective and inclusive support for families.

While this is something we are proud of, QA is not something we see as “finished”. The framework is designed as a continuous self-assessment process, meaning we will keep reviewing and strengthening our work on a rolling basis. This ensures that we are always learning, improving and adapting to the needs of the families we support.

Why Quality Assurance matters

For our team, volunteers and trustees, the QA process provides reassurance that we are operating in line with national best practice. It helps us identify what we are doing well and where we can improve, ensuring that our services remain robust, accountable and responsive.

But the benefits go far beyond our organisation.

For the families we support, it means they can feel confident that Home-Start Kernow provides safe, high-quality and carefully managed support during what can often be challenging times.

For professionals who refer families to us, QA provides assurance that they are connecting families with a trusted, well-governed service that works collaboratively with other organisations across Cornwall.

And for funders and corporate partners, the framework demonstrates that we take transparency, accountability and impact seriously. It shows that investment in Home-Start Kernow is supporting a charity that is well-run, reflective and committed to delivering meaningful outcomes for families.

Looking ahead

Quality Assurance is ultimately about making sure that families receive the best support we can offer. By regularly reviewing our practice, strengthening our systems and listening to feedback from families, volunteers and partners, we can continue to grow and improve as an organisation.

We are proud to be part of the Home-Start network and to uphold the high standards set by Home-Start UK.

Most importantly, this process helps ensure that every family who reaches out to Home-Start Kernow receives the compassionate, reliable support they deserve.
