I recently attended the West Country Women, International Women’s Day event in Plymouth, along with my colleagues Gemma and Kirstie. It reminded us that progress happens when people come together with a purpose.

The event was an inspiring gathering that brought together women from across the region to celebrate achievements, share experiences and discuss how we can continue working towards a fairer, more supportive society for women and girls.

The day featured a number of powerful speakers whose stories and leadership highlighted both the progress made and the work still to do. Among them was Alexis Bowater OBE, whose long-standing commitment to championing women’s voices and opportunities was inspiring and energising. We also heard from Caroline Harlow, the High Sheriff of Devon, who spoke passionately about community leadership and the role we all play in creating stronger, more supportive places to live.

Another impactful contribution came from Alison Hernandez, Chief Commissioner for Devon & Cornwall Police, who shared insights into the importance of safety, justice and partnership working to protect and empower women and girls across our communities.

Listening to these speakers reinforced something we see every day through our work with families: big change often begins with small acts of support and connection.

At Home-Start Kernow, that might look like a volunteer sitting down with a parent for a cup of tea and a chat, helping someone feel heard and less alone. It might be a group session where parents connect with others going through similar experiences. Sometimes it might just be reassurance that you’re doing better than you think.

These small moments of solidarity are powerful. When one parent feels more confident, that confidence carries into their family. When families feel stronger, children thrive. And when communities support one another, the benefits ripple outward.

This idea was echoed throughout the event, when women lift each other up, through mentoring, volunteering, advocacy, or simply kindness, it creates opportunities and strength that reach far beyond the original act.

Our volunteers embody this spirit every day. Many of them are parents themselves, offering peer support, mums supporting mums, sharing experiences, encouragement and understanding. Their generosity of time and compassion creates those positive ripples across Cornwall, helping families build resilience and confidence.

Events like this remind us that progress is built collectively. Organisations, communities, volunteers, supporters and funders all play a role in creating a world where women and families can thrive.

When we stand together, take action and support one another, those small acts of kindness and solidarity can grow into something much bigger, creating stronger families, stronger communities, and a brighter future for women and children across Cornwall.
